Cooker Switch Repair in Honiton

A local call-out in Honiton to help an elderly resident who had been without the use of her cooker for several weeks due to a faulty switch.

While returning from landlord EICR testing in Exmouth, I attended the property to assess the issue. After safely isolating the cooker circuit and removing the existing switch, the fault became clear – heat damage to the cables caused by loose terminal connections.

This is a common issue where incorrect tools are used during installation. Cooker terminals require a larger terminal screwdriver to ensure connections are properly tightened. Even slightly loose connections can create resistance, which leads to heat build-up and eventual damage.

In addition to replacing the faulty cooker switch, several safety improvements were made. Earth sleeving was added to exposed earth conductors, and protective grommets were installed where cables entered the metal back box to prevent abrasion — both essential for long-term safety and compliance.

Once the new cooker switch was installed, testing was carried out, including an earth loop impedance test, to confirm the circuit was safe and fully operational.

As this was a local resident and a neighbour who had been without a cooker, the work was carried out at cost, with only a minimal charge for labour. It was a simple but important job that restored a key part of the home and ensured the installation was safe to use again.
